Super Eagles forward and a member of England’s victorious squad at the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup, Ademola Lookman, has shed light on his decision to pledge his international future to Nigeria.
The Atalanta star, born in London to Nigerian parents, initially represented England at youth levels, featuring for their U19, U20, and U21 teams.
Despite his early success with the European nation, Lookman never received a senior call-up to the Three Lions. This prompted him to switch allegiance to Nigeria in 2022.
Lookman made his debut for the Super Eagles during the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Ghana, coming on as a substitute for Moses Simon.
Since then, the 27-year-old winger has thrived in the green and white jersey, taking his performances up a notch during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
He netted three goals and provided an assist, earning a spot in the prestigious Team of the Tournament.
Beyond his international exploits, Lookman played a pivotal role for Atalanta, helping the Serie A side clinch the UEFA Europa League last season.
His stellar displays have placed him in contention for the African Men’s Footballer of the Year award and garnered him a nomination for the Ballon d’Or, where he outperformed notable players like Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka and Chelsea’s Cole Palmer.
In an interview with Sporty TV, Lookman reflected on his decision to represent Nigeria, calling it a turning point in his career.
“It was massive for me because that was really a big turning point in my career. Ever since I’ve put on the Super Eagles jersey, it has been fruitful,” he said.
“We have been able to achieve together as a team and we are still growing as a team. The togetherness of the team is something that is very special within the squad.
“We showed that in the last AFCON, we got to the final but unfortunately we came up a bit short. The foundations are there and it’s just a fantastic feeling to be able to hold that with pride, to say I’m representing my country.”
Lookman’s achievements on both the continental and international stages have validated his choice, as he continues to shine for both club and country.
