The management of Agidigbo FM, a prominent radio station in Ibadan, Oyo State, has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic stampede that occurred during a children’s funfair held at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.
In a press statement signed by the station’s Director of Programmes, Olayinka AbdulWahab, on Wednesday, Agidigbo FM clarified its role in the event, stating that it only served as a media partner for its promotion and was not responsible for its organization.
The statement read: “We received the devastating news of the tragic incident at the children’s funfair organised by the WINGS Foundation with deep shock. We wholeheartedly sympathize with the families affected by this unfortunate event.”
The station emphasized its non-involvement in organizing the funfair, addressing rumors linking it to the event.
“Contrary to claims circulating in the media, Agidigbo FM was not the organiser of the event but merely provided promotional support as a media partner,” the statement added.
Highlighting their swift response to the unfolding crisis, AbdulWahab explained that Agidigbo FM took immediate action upon learning of the overcrowding.
“By 5 a.m., when reports emerged of a large crowd gathering at the venue, we began broadcasting public announcements and jingles, urging people to refrain from heading to the funfair,” the statement said.
The organizers, WINGS Foundation, were also said to have mobilized security personnel, medical teams, and other agencies to manage the situation and assist those affected.
“This is an incredibly sad day for everyone involved.
