The retiring Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, has expressed that his only regret as he bids farewell to his position is his inability to apprehend the perpetrators behind the killing of the late finance director attached to the Governor’s Office, Mr. Taiwo Oyekanmi.
Oyekanmi was tragically ambushed and shot dead on November 29, 2023, while on his way back from a bank where he had gone to withdraw money for the state.
A group of five gunmen reportedly blocked the bullion van Oyekanmi was in as it approached the Kuto Bridge in Abeokuta, opening fire on him and breaking the van’s door with sledgehammers before making off with a large sum of money.
Oyekanmi was later declared dead at the State Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta.
In response to the attack, Governor Dapo Abiodun announced a N50 million reward for anyone who could provide information leading to the arrest of the criminals.
Alamutu, who retired after 35 years of distinguished service, shared his thoughts with the press on Monday, stating that his only regret was the failure of his command to bring the criminals to justice.
He highlighted the challenges faced in tracking down the suspects, citing a lack of intelligence and information that hindered the police’s efforts.
“I deeply appreciate the unwavering support and commitment shown by my colleagues, community leaders, citizens, and the media throughout my administration,” Alamutu said. “I want to also thank you for your support through your reports. The only regret I have in this state is that up till now, we have not been able to arrest the person who shot the finance director. That’s the only regret I have and it still boils down to what we are saying, no information, no clues. It took us to so many places, it took us even to Ibadan. That is the only regret I have, but God knows that my successor will continue from where we stopped because it is important we get the culprits and God will assist my successor,” he added.
Despite this setback, Alamutu expressed confidence that his successor would continue the fight for justice.
