The Ondo State Police Command has debunked claims circulating online that a police station in the state was attacked by commercial motorcyclists.
The Command described the report as “misleading” and aimed at causing unnecessary panic among residents.
According to a statement shared on the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the Command on Monday, the incident in question occurred on December 3, 2024.
It involved a fatal motor accident along Epinmi Road, which resulted in the death of a motorcyclist and injuries to a passenger.
The statement revealed that the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident reported the incident to the Oka Police Division. Officers from the station promptly arrived at the scene, evacuated the deceased to a morgue in Oka, and ensured the injured passenger received medical care at a hospital.
The Command further clarified that a group of motorcyclists who witnessed the accident followed the police back to the station, demanding the immediate release of the driver.
However, the Divisional Police Officer explained to the group that due legal processes must be followed. After a productive dialogue, the motorcyclists dispersed peacefully.
Speaking on the issue, Commissioner of Police Abayomi Peter Oladipo stated, “It is disappointing that an online platform, without verifying the facts, would publish such a fabricated story aimed solely at creating unnecessary tension in the state.”
The Command emphasized its commitment to maintaining public safety and assured residents that adequate measures have been put in place to ensure a peaceful and secure festive season.
The police urged members of the public to disregard the unverified report and remain calm.
