The Oyo State Government has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives at a children’s carnival held at Basorun Islamic High School in Ibadan.
The stampede, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, resulted in multiple fatalities, mostly children, and left several others injured.
In a statement released by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the government confirmed that it had swiftly mobilized a rapid response team to address the crisis. Victims were rushed to hospitals across Ibadan for urgent medical care.
“The Oyo State Government is heartbroken by this tragic event and is committed to supporting the victims and their families during this difficult time,” said Prince Oyelade.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, activated emergency response teams to provide assistance at the scene. According to the statement, the state government was not involved in the planning of the private funfair and had not been approached by organizers for logistical support.
“This incident highlights the critical need for proper coordination and safety measures when organizing large-scale events, particularly those involving vulnerable groups such as children,” Oyelade emphasized.
The government has urged concerned parents to check the following medical facilities where the injured children were taken: Patnas Hospital, Basorun, Western Hospital, Basorun, Ringroad State Hospital, Molly Specialist Hospital and University College Hospital.
Prince Oyelade also revealed that the state government is awaiting a detailed report from the Commissioner of Police to determine the exact number of casualties and the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to the families affected by this devastating event. We appeal to the public to remain calm and cooperative as investigations continue and support is provided to the victims,” the statement concluded.
The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and urged event organizers to prioritize proper planning and coordination in future events.
