The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has launched an investigation into a serious incident involving a FlyBird HS 125 aircraft, with registration number 5NKAL.
The aircraft, on a flight from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, to Kotoka International Airport, Accra, encountered significant technical issues during its journey on December 6, 2024.
According to The PUNCH, the NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji reported engine troubles shortly after takeoff, leading to a diversion back to Abuja.
“Our Go Team is actively gathering evidence, conducting interviews, and analyzing the aircraft’s flight data and maintenance records. This investigation aims to identify the root causes to prevent future occurrences and improve aviation safety,” she stated.
Preliminary findings revealed that the jet, carrying four individuals, was climbing through flight level 240 toward flight level 280 when an issue with engine number two was detected.
The crew, approximately 25 nautical miles southwest of VONUK navigation station at 17:54 UTC, opted to return to Abuja.
The situation escalated as the aircraft descended to flight level 230, where engine number two failed. While preparing for landing at Abuja Airport, the crew declared a Mayday after losing engine number one at approximately 5,000 feet. Despite the dual engine failure, the flight landed safely at 18:16 UTC.
Mrs Oladeji assured the public that updates would be provided as the investigation progressed, emphasizing the NSIB’s commitment to enhancing flight safety.
