The Zamfara State Police Command has accused a newly identified terror group, Lakurawa, of orchestrating two recent explosions that rocked Yar Tasha and Mai-Gungume villages in the Dansadau district of Maru Local Government Area.
According to Daily Trust, the commissioner of Police Muhammad Shehu Dalijan confirmed the incidents, attributing the explosions to efforts by the group to resist pressure from Nigerian security forces.
On Wednesday, around 8 a.m., a commercial vehicle transporting passengers to Dansadau town triggered an explosive device planted beneath a bridge at Yar Tasha village, killing one person and injuring three others.
“Yes, there was an explosion along Dansadau road this morning. It was a bomb planted under a bridge. A motorist stepped on it, causing the explosion. Sadly, one person died, and three others were injured,” CP Dalijan stated.
Dalijan further disclosed that the explosive device was allegedly planted by remnants of the Lakurawa group, who are under intense military pressure to leave Nigeria.
The group is believed to be attempting to retreat to Birnin-Gwari forest via Zamfara.
“The terrorists are trying to escape but are facing severe pressure from our security forces. By the grace of God, we will track them down and deal with them decisively. We urge the public to provide us with useful information about their movements,” he said.
This marks the second such incident within a week. On Sunday, a similar explosive device was planted at Mai-Gungume village, also along the Dansadau road, claiming the life of another commercial driver.
A resident of Yar Tasha, who preferred to remain anonymous, said the terrorists likely exploited recent community road repairs to plant the explosives.
“We recently carried out repairs on the road. It seems the bandits took advantage of this to plant the device at a spot we filled with gravel. Now, traveling on this road is becoming a nightmare,” the resident lamented.
The victims of the latest explosion were rushed to Dansadau General Hospital for treatment. The current condition of the injured remains unclear.
The resident emphasized the urgent need for government intervention to halt the terrorists’ evolving strategies. “If nothing is done to stop this trend, traveling by road will become increasingly dangerous,” he added.
