The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has announced the introduction of specialized training programs aimed at improving policing ethics, professional conduct, and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Egbetokun disclosed this at the National Summit on Police Accountability in Abuja.
He said that the mandatory training will commence in January 2025 and will involve all officers, from recruit constables to superintendents.
“These programs are designed to equip our officers with the skills necessary for effective policing and to promote accountability across all levels,” he stated.
The summit, themed “The External, Internal, and Stakeholder’s Accountability Strategies and Mechanisms of the Nigeria Police Force/Services,” was organized in collaboration with the Cleen Foundation and supported by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
Egbetokun also highlighted the force’s collaboration with the Society for Peace Study and Practice to train officers in alternative dispute resolution, peacebuilding, and conflict resolution mechanisms.
“Our commitment to training and retraining is unwavering, as we seek to ensure our officers meet global standards,” he added.
