The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate deployment of officers to strategic locations, major highways, and identified crime hotspots across Nigeria to tackle highway robberies and other criminal activities during the festive season.
This directive aims to safeguard lives and property amid increased mobility, public gatherings, and celebrations typical of the season.
In a statement released Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, via the Nigeria Police Force’s official X account, the IGP emphasized the importance of ensuring public safety during this period.
“The IGP has instructed the deployment of adequate personnel to strategic areas nationwide. This initiative is focused on reducing crimes, particularly traffic-related robberies and highway crimes, which often escalate during festive seasons,” the statement read.
Adejobi further highlighted recent operational successes in the fight against crime. On December 10, 2024, officers from the Lagos State Command apprehended four robbery suspects—Akeem Alabi, Adewale Sogbesan, Emmanuel Izeagbe, and Francis Okoko—who confessed to operating as a syndicate around the Costain area of Lagos.
Similarly, on December 6, 2024, police in Awka, Anambra State, arrested a suspected armed robber, Miracle Mwakaloi, leading to the recovery of three AK-47 rifles during a search of his residence.
The police spokesperson reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to maintaining peace throughout the festive period. “We are positioning operatives at strategic points to deter crimes with increased visibility and patrols on major highways and roads,” Adejobi stated.
The public was also urged to collaborate with law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activities. “We encourage citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with officers as we work together to ensure a crime-free festive season,” he added.
