The Black Maidens of Ghana emerged victorious over Nigeria’s Flamingos in the 2024 WAFU U-17 Girls final, held at the Prampram Stadium on Sunday, December 22, 2024.
The thrilling encounter was decided through a penalty shootout.
Dubbed the “Jollof battle,” the final brought together two West African football powerhouses.
Ghana struck early, with Getrude Amoafo opening the scoring in the 14th minute. Just five minutes later, Priscilla Mensah doubled the lead, sending the home crowd into raptures.
The Flamingos fought back, and Precious Oscar reduced the deficit in the 34th minute. Despite their efforts, the Nigerian side trailed as the first half ended.
In the second half, Coach Bankole Olowookere’s Flamingos relentlessly pressed for an equalizer.
Their persistence paid off in stoppage time, as Harmony Chidi struck a crucial goal to level the game.
With a 2-2 draw after regulation time, the match was decided by penalties. While Ghana converted all their spot kicks, Khadija’s miss for Nigeria proved costly, handing the Black Maidens the championship title.
Following the match, Harmony Chidi received the Woman of the Match award, while Christiana Uzoma was recognized as the Goalkeeper of the Tournament.
