An unidentified policeman has been taken into custody following the accidental discharge of a bullet from his firearm, which struck and killed a young woman named Ifeoluwa Adekalu in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State.
The incident occurred on Thursday near the Okela Police Station.
Witnesses reported that the policeman, who was visiting the station at the time, accidentally discharged his weapon while celebrating news of a colleague’s promotion.
“The victim was passing by when the bullet hit her in front of a shop opposite the police station. She was said to be returning from where she went to pay her accommodation rent,” a source revealed.
However, another account suggested a different sequence of events. “I do not know her mission, but she was going to the police station when the bullet hit her,” another source said, indicating that the victim was approaching the station after getting off a commercial motorcycle.
The young woman was rushed to a nearby hospital in a desperate attempt to save her life, but she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
Confirming the incident, Ekiti State Police Commissioner, Adewale Adeniran stated, “The officer in question has been disarmed and detained. The officer will face interrogations in line with Nigerian Police Act.”
