The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed as false a viral news report claiming that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, instructed citizens to physically assault and throw stones at police officers who request to search their phones during stop-and-search operations.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, described the story as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and spread misinformation.
“The Nigeria Police Force wishes to address a viral fake news story claiming that IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, has instructed citizens to physically assault and throw stones at police officers who request to search their phones. This claim is entirely false and has no basis in reality,” the statement read.
Adejobi clarified that the IGP has not issued any directive promoting violence against law enforcement officers but instead urged citizens to report cases of police misconduct through appropriate channels.
“The IGP has called on citizens to report instances of police misconduct using the designated channels. This approach emphasizes accountability and the rule of law, rather than resorting to violent actions,” he added.
To facilitate complaints, the Force provided helplines and contact details, including +2347056792065, +2349133333785, and +2349133333786. Citizens can also reach out via social media handles such as #PoliceNG on X (formerly Twitter), #ngpolice on Facebook, and #nigeriapoliceforce on Instagram. Email complaints can be sent to [email protected], and the police website at npf.gov.ng remains accessible for further inquiries.
The Police also urged the public to verify information through credible sources to avoid being misled by false narratives.
“Members of the public are advised to remain vigilant against misinformation and verify news through credible sources. The Nigeria Police Force is committed to fostering trust and cooperation with the communities we serve,” Adejobi stated.
The Force reiterated its dedication to maintaining accountability and upholding the rule of law while encouraging citizens to report any misconduct responsibly.
