At least one person died while five others, including a mother and her four children, sustained injuries in a tragic accident that occurred along the Benin-Asaba Expressway in Delta State on Thursday.
The incident was reported by the Senior Special Assistant on Civil Society and Youth Mobilization to the Delta State Governor, Harrison Gwanishu, in a Facebook post.
According to Gwanishu, the crash occurred when a Toyota Sienna vehicle carrying the victims collided with a moving truck.
Footage from the scene revealed the Sienna with extensive damage, including a crumpled bonnet and a shattered windscreen.
Sharing details, Gwanishu stated, “I have just witnessed a tragic accident on the Benin-Asaba Expressway involving a Toyota Sienna traveling from Lagos to the East. The vehicle, which was transporting a family, collided with a moving truck, resulting in the death of the female passenger in the front seat.”
He also disclosed that he assisted in rescuing a woman and her four children, who were later taken to a hospital in Asaba, Delta State.
The injured victims are receiving treatment at ST Theresa Hospital in Issele-Uku. Gwanishu urged the public to assist in identifying the victims’ families and called for caution among drivers to prevent such tragedies.
“I commend the prompt response of the FRSC Delta State/Issele Office. The rescued mother and children are in critical condition and are being treated at ST Theresa Hospital Issele-Uku. Families can locate the hospital from Asaba by entering the bus and stopping at Issele-Uku Junction.
“As you journey back from the Christmas holiday, I urge you to talk to your driver to exercise caution and avoid reckless driving,” Gwanishu added.
