Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has unveiled plans to establish a higher institution in Opobo Town, aiming to stimulate both academic and economic progress in the region.
In addition, the governor pledged to embark on land reclamation projects to expand space for crucial infrastructure, which he believes will improve the living standards and create substantial job opportunities for local residents.
Fubara made these promises during the inauguration of the 7km Opobo Town Ring Road, complete with three crossing bridges, in the Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area on Monday.
The new road, set to enhance connectivity and accessibility between Opobo Town and its neighboring areas, is seen as a significant step toward the region’s development.
He stated, “Other developments are on the way. We intend to bring a higher institution here. We will also carry out more reclamation, as land is a major challenge in this area. We will empower the people so they won’t depend solely on me, and we’ll work to create an environment that fosters employment and economic growth. That is the path to Opobo’s growth.”
The governor also noted that while the project was originally launched on May 28, 2023, by the previous administration, his government had redesigned and executed it to meet modern standards.
“This is a project that speaks to me. It’s something my people will see, and it reflects my leadership,” Fubara remarked.
He expressed his heartfelt thanks to the people of Opobo/Nkoro for their unwavering support, recognizing their role in his political success.
“I know your faces, your names, and your needs,” he said. “Thank you for standing by us when it mattered most. We’re stronger every day.”
Fubara urged political leaders, traditional rulers, and citizens to continue nurturing the peace Opobo is renowned for, emphasizing its importance in maintaining community harmony and security.
“Opobo/Nkoro is known for its peace, and while we’re not crime-free, the situation is manageable. This peace is what binds us together, and I ask you to continue nurturing it,” he explained.
The inauguration ceremony saw the attendance of the Governor of Zamfara State, Dr. Dauda Lawal, who lauded Fubara for his visionary leadership. Lawal commended the Ring Road project as a model of how infrastructure can drive socio-economic growth, enhance quality of life, and foster progress, especially in rural communities.
“The Opobo Ring Road and bridges will enhance connectivity, promote trade, and provide access to essential services for residents of this area and the entire kingdom,” said Governor Lawal. “Such infrastructure will attract investment, boost tourism, and improve the pride and sense of belonging of the people of Opobo.”
