Antoine Griezmann delivered an injury-time stunner as Atlético Madrid pulled off a breathtaking comeback in a seven-goal thriller against Sevilla.
The game began with Rodrigo De Paul continuing his fine form, scoring in consecutive La Liga matches to give Atlético an early lead.
However, Sevilla responded instantly through Dodi Lukebakio, whose strike leveled the scoreline.
Sevilla then took control, with Isaac Romero and Juanlu Sánchez finding the net on either side of halftime to establish a commanding 3-1 lead, leaving Atlético with just 30 minutes to salvage the game.
The comeback began when Griezmann slotted in his first of the night just after the hour mark. Substitute Samuel Lino then equalized with a sensational long-range effort—his first goal of the season.
As the game neared its conclusion, Griezmann delivered a signature moment of brilliance, smashing home a dramatic winner in injury time.
This thrilling victory marked Atlético Madrid’s fifth consecutive La Liga win and their ninth straight triumph across all competitions. It keeps Los Colchoneros firmly in third place, one point behind Real Madrid and three adrift of leaders FC Barcelona, who have played an extra game.
For Sevilla, the loss left them in 13th place, but their spirited display and Romero’s first goal of the season hinted at positive signs for the Andalusian side.
The match started at a blistering pace, with Atlético Madrid nearly taking an early lead when Julián Alvarez set up Griezmann on the edge of the box.
The Frenchman struck his shot first-time, only for it to ricochet off the crossbar. Moments later, De Paul broke the deadlock, winning possession on the edge of Sevilla’s box before firing into the side netting.
Sevilla wasted no time equalizing, with Lukebakio taking a short corner, cutting inside, and blasting his shot past Jan Oblak at the near post.
After a quieter phase of play, Sevilla seized the lead through a swift counterattack. Kike Salas threaded a superb through ball to Romero, who drilled his shot across Oblak and into the bottom corner.
Atlético came close to leveling before halftime when Conor Gallagher rounded Sevilla’s keeper but failed to finish. Julián Alvarez then thought he had equalized, only for VAR to disallow the goal for an offside in the buildup.
The first half ended with Sevilla in control, having dominated possession and executed incisive counterattacks.
Atlético, despite creating opportunities, needed a stronger second-half response to unsettle their opponents.
The second half began with both teams showing intensity, as Pablo Barrios and Lucien Agoumé picked up early yellow cards.
Sevilla extended their lead with a brilliant team goal, shifting play to the left before Salas’ pinpoint cross found Sánchez at the back post, who made it 3-1.
Atlético responded immediately. Barrios played a perfect through ball to Griezmann, who calmly slotted past Álvaro Fernández to narrow the deficit.
Diego Simeone turned to his bench, introducing Alexander Sørloth and Koke, while Sevilla brought on Saúl Ñíguez. Sørloth came close to scoring thrice in quick succession, but Fernández denied him each time with superb saves.
Atlético’s persistence paid off when substitute Lino unleashed a thunderous 25-yard strike, beating Fernández to draw the hosts level.
Sevilla made their final changes, introducing Kelechi Iheanacho and Gonzalo Montiel, but the momentum was firmly with Atlético.
The decisive moment came deep into injury time. Griezmann received the ball on the edge of the box, turned his defender, and unleashed a powerful shot that struck the underside of the crossbar before finding the net.
The Metropolitano erupted as Griezmann celebrated by whipping off his shirt, cementing his status as Atlético’s talisman.
Fans cheered every pass until the final whistle confirmed Atlético’s dramatic 4-3 victory. Griezmann’s heroics proved pivotal once again as he scored twice in the second half to inspire a sensational comeback.
Although Griezmann has never won La Liga, even during his stint at Barcelona, Atlético’s current form suggests this could finally be the year he lifts the title in Madrid.
