The Sokoto State Agency for the Control of AIDS and Tuberculosis has revealed that 15,042 individuals are currently receiving treatment for HIV in the state.
This was disclosed by the Special Adviser to the Sokoto State Governor on SOSACAT, Sada Durbawa, during a press briefing on Monday in Sokoto.
Durbawa attributed the progress in managing HIV/AIDS in the state to the robust support provided by the state government.
He noted that nearly all residents of Sokoto have been screened for HIV, a milestone he described as key to achieving the state’s health goals.
“Presently, we have 15,042 individuals undergoing treatment in Sokoto. Up to 94 percent of the population has been screened, and we are steadily moving toward our target,” he stated.
Durbawa also highlighted the availability of testing kits in 13 of the state’s 23 local government areas, with additional testing facilitated at primary healthcare centers.
The Executive Secretary of SOSACAT, Kabiru Sokoto, commended the state’s efforts, emphasizing a major achievement in preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
“From December 2023 to December 2024, out of the 162 pregnant women tested, there has not been a single case of mother-to-child transmission. This underscores our progress toward eliminating new HIV cases in Sokoto by 2030,” he remarked.
Sokoto added that treatment facilities have been established in 13 local government areas, supported by 244 primary healthcare centers offering testing services.
“With everyone’s cooperation, we are optimistic about achieving a HIV/AIDS-free society in the coming years,” he concluded.
