Paraguayan President, Santiago Peña, was hospitalised at Rio de Janeiro’s Samaritano Hospital on Monday while attending the G20 Summit as a guest.
The 46-year-old leader experienced chest pains during the high-profile event and was taken to the healthcare facility for a series of medical evaluations,
Vice President Pedro Alliana disclosed via social media.
“I spoke with President Santiago Peña, who is at the Samaritano Hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, after a slight indisposition. He is well while awaiting the results of his medical tests,” Alliana confirmed in a social media post, reassuring the public about Peña’s condition.
The hospital’s initial bulletin reported that Peña’s health is “stable,” and he is “well,” though he remains under observation as a precautionary measure. Paraguayan media later revealed that an electrocardiogram performed on Peña indicated some irregularities in his heart function.
The incident occurred during the Summit’s opening ceremonies held at Rio’s Modern Art Museum. Peña was initially treated at the G20’s first aid station at the venue.
Following medical advice, he was transported by ambulance to Samaritano Hospital for more comprehensive care.
“Thank you all for the messages of support for Santi. He is well, still under observation and waiting for some results at the Samaritano Hospital in Rio de Janeiro,” Paraguay’s First Lady Leticia Ocampos shared on her social media, expressing gratitude for the concern shown.
Brazilian authorities also issued a brief statement acknowledging Peña’s admission to the hospital, describing it as due to “an indisposition,” but provided no further details about his condition or prognosis.
