The Lagos State Environmental Task Force has apprehended 17 individuals, including eight minors, for alleged street begging in various parts of the state.
The operation, which took place on Monday, December 16, 2024, was part of the government’s efforts to curb public nuisance and maintain order in the metropolis.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the arrests in a statement shared on social media.
He explained that the operation targeted individuals engaged in street begging, particularly in traffic-prone areas.
“Seventeen persons, including eight minors, were apprehended for the unlawful act of street begging in traffic hold-ups across Lagos,” Wahab stated.
The operation was carried out in key locations, including Alfred Rewane, Osborne, Alexandra, and Burdillon roads in Ikoyi, as well as the Lekki-Ajah Expressway in Victoria Island.
According to Wahab, the arrested individuals will be transferred to appropriate government facilities for further action in line with state laws.
“The Lagos State Environmental Task Force conducted a special operation to address public nuisances across the city. Street begging, especially in traffic, causes disruption and poses safety risks to the public,” he added.
Wahab reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining a clean and orderly environment in Lagos, urging residents to support ongoing efforts to tackle unlawful activities in public spaces.
