The Zamfara State chapter of the National Human Rights Commission has expressed concern over the alarming increase in human rights violations in the state.
The NHRC disclosed that over 120 cases of abuse, neglect, and infringement of fundamental freedoms have been recorded so far in 2024, a significant rise compared to the previous year.
Speaking during the 2024 World Human Rights Day rally in Gusau on Wednesday, the NHRC Coordinator for Zamfara, Abdullahi Abubakar, highlighted the urgency of addressing these violations.
“So far, we have received more than 120 cases this year, which is higher than last year, and that is a worrisome trend for the state,” he said.
“We must continue working with relevant stakeholders, especially the state government, to ensure citizens’ rights are protected and justice is served.”
Abubakar called on the Zamfara State government to enforce laws passed by the previous administration, particularly those aimed at addressing issues such as gender-based violence, displacement, and banditry.
“We have been advocating for the implementation of these laws, but nothing has been done yet. It’s time for action to improve the lives of citizens and curb these violations,” he added.
The Emir of Gusau commended the NHRC’s efforts when participants visited his palace during the rally. He urged communities to uphold values of fairness and compassion.
“This initiative is commendable. Everyone must do their part to assist the less privileged and respect one another. If we see others suffering, we should extend a helping hand. I hope this awareness extends to all corners of the state,” the Emir stated.
The rally, which began at Freedom Square and ended at the Emir’s Palace, attracted participants from civil society organizations, community leaders, and activists.
