Eintracht Frankfurt’s unbeaten run in the Europa League came to an end as Lyon triumphed 3-2.
The match was decided by Ernest Nuamah’s stunning strike in the 54th minute, with Eintracht’s Omar Marmoush scoring a late consolation goal.
Despite being in excellent form this season, Marmoush started the match on the bench under Dino Toppmoller, only being introduced after Eintracht found themselves 3-1 down.
Nuamah’s powerful shot into the top corner came four minutes after Malick Fofana had given Lyon a 2-1 lead. Lyon’s comeback had been sparked by Rayan Cherki, who equalized after Ansgar Knauff’s first-half opener.
The win propelled Lyon into fourth place, pushing Eintracht down a spot in the standings.
Lyon had previously struggled against German teams at home, having won just once in their last five encounters (D2 L2), but they broke that streak in their inaugural meeting with Eintracht. For Frankfurt, this marked their first loss to a French side since a 2-0 defeat to Sochaux in the 1980-81 UEFA Cup.
Marmoush, however, did manage to maintain his impressive run in the competition. He has now been involved in six Europa League goals this season (four goals, two assists).
The only Egyptian player to have contributed to more goals in a single Europa League campaign is Mohamed Salah, who was involved in eight goals last season (five goals, three assists).
