Property worth millions of naira has been destroyed following a fire outbreak at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
The blaze occurred in the early hours of Saturday, disrupting operations at the medical facility.
Sources within the hospital revealed that the fire engulfed the Emergency and Accident Unit, damaging critical infrastructure and valuable items.
Among the destroyed items were office equipment, medical books, engines, electronic gadgets, as well as sections of the building’s roof and ceiling.
The inferno reportedly began around 5 a.m. in the office of a paediatrics consultant, with preliminary investigations pointing to an electrical spark as the likely cause.
A source disclosed that the situation escalated quickly, forcing hospital staff to evacuate 16 patients from the affected ward to safety.
The hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Omotayo Ogunleye, confirmed the incident while speaking with journalists on Saturday.
According to Ogunleye, the fire has since been brought under control, and the hospital has resumed its usual operations.
“Yes, it is true. It is a minor incident. But, normal activities have resumed in the hospital,” Ogunleye assured during the telephone interview.
Efforts to assess the full extent of the damage and determine preventive measures to avert future occurrences are reportedly underway.
