Manchester City head coach, Pep Guardiola, has acknowledged that his past successes with the club have shielded him from being dismissed despite a difficult patch in the team’s form.
Man City has endured a tough run, failing to win any of their last six matches across all competitions.
This sequence includes five consecutive losses and one draw, marking the worst stretch of Guardiola’s managerial career.
Speaking to reporters, Guardiola explained that his track record of 18 trophies in eight years has given him some leeway.
“At this football club you have to win and, if you don’t win, you will be in trouble,” he said. “I know the people say, ‘why is Pep not in trouble, why is Pep not sacked?’”
He went on to reflect on his time at City, noting, “What we have done the last eight years is why I have this margin. The people rely on me, the hierarchy, all the people.”
Guardiola acknowledged the unusual nature of his current situation, stating, “It’s not normal in the big clubs to have the results we’ve had, but we have to accept it. What’s for sure is that I want to stay. I want to do it.”
However, he also recognized that his tenure at the club could end if he no longer feels he is benefiting them. “But the moment I feel I’m not positive for the club, another one [manager] will come. It has to be.”
